Image converter for Mac: formats, size and text
Updated:
An image converter for Mac can change a format without changing your original. Start with Preview for a single export. Yuzu Drag is useful for repeated Finder tasks: drag, tap a key and drop on a format or tool. Image processing happens on your Mac.
Start with Preview
Open a photo in Preview and choose File > Export. Choose a format offered by your version of macOS, adjust the available quality control, then save under a new name. For a dimension change, use Tools > Adjust Size. Inspect the exported image before deleting anything.
Preview is a good choice when you want to look closely at one photo. A different extension alone does not make an image smaller or improve its detail.
Choose the operation you need
| Job | Yuzu choice | What to check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Make a more widely accepted copy | Convert to JPG | Transparent areas and fine text |
| Reduce file weight | Compress | Detail, artifacts and actual file size |
| Change dimensions | Resize | Pixel dimensions and framing |
| Remove embedded details | Metadata | The resulting metadata, not just the filename |
| Copy words from a picture | Copy Text OCR | Names, numbers and reading order |
| Read a pictured code | Read QR | The decoded text before opening a link |
Compression can use quality or a target size; results depend on the source. Resize keeps proportions when Keep aspect ratio is enabled, but can stretch an image when it is disabled. Animated GIFs are excluded from conversion, compression and resizing. WebP encoding is bundled; other output choices depend on the native encoders available on your Mac.
Use the drag wheel
- Select an image, or a batch of compatible images, in Finder and begin dragging.
- Tap ⇧ to open Convert. Move onto JPG and drop to create a converted copy.
- For a tool instead, begin a new drag and tap ⌘ to open Tools.
- Drop on the relevant wedge and complete its options if requested.
The source format is omitted from the conversion wheel. Conversions create new files rather than replacing the source. Clipboard tools return text rather than a new image. Review recognized text before pasting it into a form or document.
Pick a specific guide
Use the HEIC to JPG guide for phone photos, the compression guide for a file-size limit, or resize and compress together for repeat preparation. For sensitive photos, read remove location metadata before sharing.
For other source formats, see PNG to JPG. To put pictures into a document rather than another image format, follow JPG to PDF.
