Zip and unzip files on Mac: Finder and Yuzu Drag
Updated:
To zip and unzip files on Mac, start with Finder: compress a selection or open a received ZIP. Yuzu Drag adds ZIP, TAR and GZ creation and supported archive extraction to the same drag workflow as other file tasks.
Built-in Finder method
Select a file, folder or group of files, then Control-click and choose Compress. Finder creates a ZIP copy while leaving the selected originals in place. Double-click a received ZIP archive to open it with the built-in archive utility.
Before sending, open the archive yourself and check its contents. Watch for extra nested folders and unintended private files. Packaging a folder does not make its contents private or necessarily make already-compressed media much smaller.
What Yuzu adds
| Operation | Supported choices |
|---|---|
| Create an archive | ZIP, TAR or GZ |
| Extract an archive | ZIP, TAR, GZ, TGZ, RAR, 7Z, BZ2 or XZ |
The GZ choice creates a gzip-compressed TAR file with a .tar.gz extension, so it can contain folders or several files. It is not a bare gzip stream of one file.
Archive creation is available as a fallback for files and folders. Extraction has safety limits, and password-protected archives are unsupported. If an archive cannot be extracted, check the source and obtain an unprotected copy or use a suitable trusted archive utility. Do not remove security protections merely to open an unfamiliar download.
Create or extract with the wheel
- Select the files or folder in Finder and begin dragging.
- Tap ⇧ for Convert, then drop on the desired archive choice.
- To unpack a supported archive, begin dragging the archive and tap ⌘ for Tools.
- Drop on Extract and check the resulting contents before using them.
Creating an archive produces a new file; your originals remain. Keep the received archive until you have confirmed that the extracted files are complete and readable. Leave enough free disk space for both the archive and its expanded contents.
Use file actions when your next step is moving a prepared archive between folders. If your aim is a smaller picture or movie rather than a package of files, start with image tools or video tools.
