Permute alternative: everyday file tasks or deeper media work?
Updated:
Short answer
Yuzu Drag is a Permute alternative for supported everyday conversions and compression when you want an action directly from a Finder drag. Permute is a better fit for deeper media conversion work. Check the product version before comparing compatibility: Permute 4 and Permute 3 have different system requirements.
These are the default keys; you can change them in Settings. For folders or mixed file types, ⌘ can open Actions directly.

| Decision | Yuzu Drag | Permute |
|---|---|---|
| Current-version system | macOS 14+, Intel and Apple silicon | Permute 4: macOS 26+, Apple silicon |
| Older-version option | Check Yuzu's minimum OS before installing | Permute 3 offered for macOS 11–15, including Intel |
| Main interaction | Drag, key tap, drop on a choice | Media converter with presets, automation and drop zones |
| Everyday task example | HEIC to JPG; supported compression | Broad media conversion catalog |
| Temporary staging | Float action | Evaluate the vendor's catalog for your specific workflow |

Use Preview first for a simple photo or PDF
For an occasional HEIC photo, open it in Preview, choose File > Export, select JPEG and save a new copy. Open the result in the app that needs it. A conversion app is not necessary merely because a website does not accept your source photo. Apple's image conversion guide describes the built-in route.
For a PDF attachment, Preview's File > Export includes the Reduce File Size Quartz filter. Save a separate output and inspect the text and any scanned content before sending. Apple's PDF size guide documents this method. Expect results to depend on the input; an already compact file may not benefit.
Repeated tasks and specialized media requirements are stronger reasons to evaluate a dedicated utility than a single supported Preview export.
Where Permute 4 is better
Permute's product page lists subtitle controls, audio-track changes, splitting by time and advanced video presets. It also offers automation and drop zones. Choose it if you need one of those specific media operations; a similar drag gesture does not mean Yuzu supports the same outputs.
A familiar drag interface does not make conversion catalogs interchangeable. Before switching, list the source files and destinations you deliver, then check the vendor's current supported operations. If Permute handles a required media task that is outside Yuzu's documented scope, keep Permute for that task.
Permute 3 remains relevant to older Macs. Do not assume an Intel user must switch away from Permute simply because Permute 4 is Apple-silicon-only. The vendor explicitly offers an older-version route, with its own compatibility range.
Where Yuzu Drag fits
Try Yuzu if your needs are covered by its documented operations and you also want a temporary shelf:
- Begin dragging an HEIC photo from Finder.
- Tap ⇧ to open Convert.
- Drop on JPG.
- Inspect the generated photo before using it in the destination app.
For compression, drag a supported image, video or PDF, tap ⌘ for Tools and drop on Compress. For temporary staging, drag a file, tap ⌘ for Tools and tap ⌘ again for Actions, then drop on Float. See the tool catalog for the actual supported operations.
Conversion and compression produce new files. Move and Rename change originals when you choose them. Local file processing is separate from deliberately selected network actions; do not treat all file utilities as upload-based services.
Compare with your own delivery task
Use one file from the work that prompted the search. Check whether each app supports the required output, whether the receiving app accepts it and whether the result looks right. Only then compare the number of steps you repeat. A smaller app is useful when it covers your job; a deeper converter is useful when the job needs its controls.

FAQ
Is Permute 4 available for Intel Macs?
The vendor lists Permute 4 for Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later. Permute 3 remains offered for macOS 11–15, including Intel.
Should I replace Permute for complex media work?
Not on the basis of this comparison. Permute's media depth is a reason to choose it. Check your exact operation before switching.
