Combine videos on Mac: join clips in order

Short answer

To combine videos on Mac, open the first clip in QuickTime Player and choose Edit > Add Clip to End to add another. Arrange the clips and save a separate movie. Yuzu Drag joins selected MP4 and MOV clips into one MP4: drag them, tap ⌘ for Tools, and drop on JOIN. It uses the supplied selection order, with no ordering editor, so play the output to check the sequence.

Shortcut note: These steps use the default drag shortcuts. While holding the files, briefly press and release ⌘ for Tools; tap it again for Actions. ⇧ opens Convert. If you changed the shortcuts in Yuzu, use your configured keys instead.

Combining clips is useful when the recipient wants one continuous file. It is a different job from sending several attachments, converting a container or reducing file size. Decide which clips belong together and what should play first before choosing a tool.

Try QuickTime Player first

Apple's Add a movie or clip instructions explain the built-in joining workflow. QuickTime is useful when you want to see the clips and adjust their arrangement yourself.

  1. Open the first movie in QuickTime Player.
  2. Without selecting an existing clip, choose Edit > Add Clip to End.
  3. Select the next movie and add it.
  4. Review the clips shown in the arrangement view. Drag a clip to a different position if needed.
  5. Repeat for additional clips, then click Done when the sequence is right.
  6. Save the combined movie under a separate name and location.
  7. Reopen the saved result and play across each join.

Work from duplicates if you are concerned about changing your only originals. Choose the saved output according to the receiving app's requirements, and inspect its actual container rather than assuming it matches the input filename.

For a one-off combination where visual ordering is important, stay with QuickTime if it handles your sources. A supported extension alone does not prove that a particular file's internal media is readable. Open each clip separately if adding one fails.

Join clips with Yuzu Drag

Yuzu's Join tool accepts MP4 and MOV inputs and combines clips into one MP4. Treat it as a whole-clip joining operation, not an editing timeline.

  1. Put the intended source clips together in Finder.
  2. Select the clips you want to combine.
  3. Begin dragging the selection and keep the drag active.
  4. Tap ⌘ to show Tools.
  5. Drop on JOIN to start the join; there is no options sheet.
  6. Wait for the new MP4, then play it from the beginning.

Yuzu joins clips in the order supplied by the selection and does not provide a clip-order editor. Finder’s visible sort order is not a guarantee of the supplied order. Use QuickTime if you need to arrange clips by hand, and check playback across every join.

Review more than the opening frame

A combined movie can begin correctly and still have its remaining clips in the wrong order. Write down the intended sequence before processing. An opening view, a demonstration and a closing view make a useful example set; they are not a measured product test.

Play the beginning and end of each source section in the final movie. Check that a clip has not been duplicated, omitted or replaced by an older take. Compare the finished duration with the source durations as a reasonableness check, not an exact guarantee about output timing.

Listen across the joins as well. The clips may have different volume levels or background sounds. Joining complete clips does not promise an audio-mixing pass, so inspect whether the result is comfortable to watch and hear. If you need detailed sound adjustments, use a suitable editor.

Mixed clips need a closer look

Sources from different cameras or recording sessions can have different dimensions, orientation and frame rates. Review the output for sideways pictures, unexpected framing and changes in apparent smoothness. The fact that the inputs use supported extensions does not guarantee a particular presentation for every combination.

Test a representative pair before processing a larger collection. Include the pair with the most different visual properties rather than only two matching clips. If the result is unsuitable, return to the sources and choose an editing workflow with the controls you need.

Keep the original files until the final movie has been accepted. A joined delivery copy is not a replacement for the separate recordings when future editing may be needed. Name the output clearly and reopen it from the destination folder before sending.

Size and delivery checks

Joining clips does not promise a smaller attachment. Check the finished file against the receiving site's byte and duration limits. A single attachment can still be too large, even though it is easier to select than several source files.

Confirm that the recipient can play the MP4. For a website upload, inspect the published playback rather than relying only on your local preview. Keep the source set available until you know the destination accepted the correct movie.

Browse video tools for the available operations. Use remove audio from video for a separate silent-copy task, or compress video when attachment size is the issue. Download Yuzu Drag if a repeated drag-and-drop join fits your work; keep QuickTime for jobs where arranging the clips visually is the better choice.
