Clop alternative: manual actions or automatic optimization?
Updated:
Short answer
Yuzu Drag is a Clop alternative if you want to choose when a file is converted or compressed by dragging it onto an action. Keep Clop if the main benefit is automatic clipboard optimization or watching folders. These are different workflows; this comparison does not treat a manual drag as a replacement for automatic optimization.
These are the default keys; you can change them in Settings. For folders or mixed file types, ⌘ can open Actions directly.
Yuzu also offers presets, image chains and Shortcuts for repeat work. Its optional Clipboard history is not an automatic clipboard optimizer like Clop.

| Decision | Yuzu Drag | Clop |
|---|---|---|
| Main interaction | Explicit drag, key tap, drop | Clipboard optimization, watch folders and manual workflows |
| Local processing | Image, video and PDF compression | Vendor markets local image, video and PDF optimization |
| Temporary staging | Float action | Compression and automation are the focus of this comparison |
| Minimum system | macOS 14+, Intel and Apple silicon | macOS 14+ |

Start with Preview for occasional work
For a single photo, open it in Preview and use File > Export. Choose the destination format and save a separate file. For example, a HEIC photo can be exported as JPEG when the receiving service does not accept the original. Apple's Preview conversion guide covers the built-in method.
For a PDF attachment, use File > Export and the Reduce File Size Quartz filter. Inspect the exported copy at a readable zoom before sending it. A smaller attachment is not useful if small print becomes difficult to read. Apple's PDF size guide explains this option.
If these occasional steps are enough, installing another utility is optional. The case for either Clop or Yuzu becomes stronger when this work repeats throughout your day.
Where Clop is better
Clop's homepage explicitly emphasizes clipboard and watch-folder automation. Choose it when you want optimization to happen as part of copying content or saving files into a watched location, rather than selecting an action on each drag.
The same source describes target-size workflows, presets and pipelines. Those controls are worth evaluating with your actual delivery requirements. Someone preparing many attachments with a strict destination limit should compare the available controls, not choose on the basis of a gesture alone.
Clop also markets local processing. Switching to Yuzu solely for an offline claim would miss a capability Clop already provides. This page does not infer that Clop lacks a feature merely because it is not described in the table.
Where Yuzu Drag fits
Yuzu is useful when you want a deliberate action on a selected file, plus a temporary shelf in the same utility. For an image compression task:
- Begin dragging the image from Finder.
- Tap ⌘ to open Tools.
- Drop on Compress and use the available options.
- Inspect the new file before using it in place of the original.
For conversion, drag an HEIC photo, tap ⇧ for Convert and drop on JPG. For Float, drag a file, tap ⌘ for Tools and tap ⌘ again for Actions, then drop on Float. Check the image tools for the supported operations rather than assuming any source can become any destination.
Conversion and compression create new files. Move and Rename change originals when you deliberately select those actions. Ordinary conversion is local; network sharing is a separate choice.
Test the workflow you actually need
If you usually copy a screenshot and paste it straight into a message, trial Clop's clipboard route. If you usually pick an existing file in Finder and decide whether to compress or convert it, try Yuzu's explicit action. Use the same source for an output comparison and inspect fine detail, not just file size.

FAQ
Does Yuzu replace Clop's clipboard workflow?
Choose Clop if automatic clipboard or watch-folder optimization is the requirement. Yuzu's workflow here is an explicit file drag and action.
Can both apps process files locally?
Yes. Local processing is shared ground; it is not a unique Yuzu advantage.
